Folliculitis


Presents as isolated pustules, papules, and erythema or darker pigmentation at the hair follicles.

May be itchy and painful

Caused by inflammation of hair follicles usually caused by improper hair removal

Management:


Treatment: Avoid shaving hairs in the affected area; clip only.

In severe cases, antibacterial powder may be prescribed and sprinkled over area of inflammation.

Rarely—systemic antibiotics

Healthcare provider may do gram stain and culture to identify organism.

Prevention:

 
Shave in the direction that hair grows.
Electric shavers are generally used.
Safety razors not routinely recommended.
If using safety razor, use mild soap, shaving cream, or skin barrier powder.
Wash, rinse, and completely dry the skin before applying new pouching system.
